Chapter 19
I stared at Jake dumbfounded. There was no possible way he was anything more than another body behind a desk in Afterlife Resources. Not Jake . . . he was so . . . so . . . normal. Iâd known him for over a hundred years. He was boring. And plain.
âExpecting someone else?â he asked, rubbing his temples as though a headache was coming on.
âI mean, technically, yeah.â It was all I could manage. I looked at my feet, massaging my head in the same way. This didnât make any sense.
Dorian leaned into me as he whispered, âYou said there were no such things as gods and devils.â
I snapped my head up. âIf youâre Satan, is there a god too?â
He cringed. âDonât call me that.â Turning to the side, he faced a door in the hallway that had not been there before. âCome into my office. I think we have a lot to talk about.â
He twisted the knob, walking through with Hades perched on his shoulder, not saying another word. Dorian and I didnât move. I crouched down, feeling Ezraâs skin. It was clammy and paler than it should have been. Dorian kneeled, scooping my other mate in his arms. âHeâll be okay,â he assured me. âIâve got him.â
In that moment, Dorian did more for me than he could have imagined. I was still angry at him for attempting to kill Hades and Jake. He had no idea what my powers could really do, and he made some terrible decisions in his anger. I wouldâve expected Roman to lose his shit this way, but not him. When he picked up Ezra, the vampire he shared me with, it showed a strength and caring in him I didnât know was there. He didnât want to see me hurt, and that meant he didnât want to see my other mates hurt.
Heâd said I was the only thing they had in common. It was true in a sense, but it was also more than that. A by-product of caring about me meant caring for each other too. We may never live together under one roof, but I had a feeling when all this was over, weâd still spend more time together than any of us realized. If the world didnât blow up, that is.
âAre you coming or not?â Hades called from the room theyâd entered.
We followed them in, and the first thing I saw was Francine, Jakeâs secretary. I raised my eyebrows in surprise.
âHi, Fury. Heâs already in there,â she said, casually nodding to his office door without looking up from her crossword puzzle.
I narrowed my eyes. I knew it. Acting like she didnât know which Fury I was all these years just to agitate me. âThanks, twat.â I tossed the insult at her and stomped right into Jakeâs office.
It looked exactly the same as it always did.
âHow can you tell me youâre the freaking devil, then keep this shithole as your office?â I asked, crossing my arms and sitting down in a chair in front of him.
